In a tragic turn of events, one of the victims of a New Year's Day car accident in Ohio has been identified as the girlfriend of the man fatally shot by police at a local Walmart over the summer. John Crawford lll, 22, was killed by Beavercreek Police in August after an air rifle he picked up in the store was mistaken for a real one.

According to ABC 22, 26-year-old Tasha Thomas was killed when a car driven by 30-year-old Frederick Bailey crashed into a pole and flipped over several times. Police told ABC 22 that the car was doing between 90 and 100 miles per hour at the time of the accident. Neither Thomas nor Bailey were wearing seatbelts, and the impact threw both of them from the vehicle. One witness recalled hearing a "big bang and just a ton of metal just tumbling down the street."

Thomas' mother told ABC 22 that Bailey, a friend, was giving her daughter a ride to her vehicle. ABC 22 added that Thomas leaves three young children behind.

An investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing, but police suspect that alcohol may have played a factor.
