At midnight, possession of small amounts of marijuana was decriminalized in D.C. For the record, this does not mean that weed is now legal in the District. Active members of marijuana culture already know this, but there's always someone (a few people, really) who don't pay attention.

D.C.'s new marijuana law now makes possession of an ounce or less of the substance punishable a $25 fine, as well police obviously seizing your weed. According to the Washington Post, police can no longer act simply because they smell marijuana, and they are now unable to demand identification from anyone found in possession of it.

If you're caught with more than ounce of weed, you're still subject to arrest:

None

The Post also notes that the new law has left police with a bit of an enforcement dilemma, but Metropolitan Police Department rules show that fines for littering are now more costly than those for possession of small amounts of weed ($75 to $25).

The number of littering fines is about to skyrocket.
