He’s worn the adamantium claws since X-Men debuted in 2000, but during an interview with SFX, Hugh Jackman revealed that he only has one more outing as Wolverine left in him. When asked where he wants to take the character of Logan in Wolverine 3, Jackman responded by saying:

None

Even though he’s not officially signed for a third movie, Jackman said that he only wants to be in another Wolverine film if the next script improved upon 2013’s The Wolverine. When asked what direction that includes, he brought up one comic storyline in particular:

None

Old Man Logan sees Wolverine in his later years living in a war-torn wasteland taken over by super villains. He’s then forced back into action for one last fight, similar to The Dark Knight Returns or Unforgiven. The story would have to be rewritten from the comics due to licensing issues, but the premise is so strong that it could still hold together.

It’s not known whether or not Fox would recast such an iconic role, but it helps that the studio has a new cast of X-Men from First Class. But can the franchise survive without Wolverine? We’ll just have to see.

Until then, you can enjoy Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past on May 23.
