Bad news for fans of FX's Justified (which should really be everyone ever): It's looking more and more like next season of the series will be the last. Considering that season five just premiered last night, that means, with every passing day, we're just getting closer to the end of this show. And that is the saddest thing ever.
The first confirmation comes from series star Walton Goggins, who portrays Boyd Crowder on the series. In an interview with EW to promote the season five premiere, Goggins said the following about the future of the series:
[Creator Graham Yost] has said the writers are planning for the show to end after six seasons. Is that what you had in mind?
I think we all feel that way, and we don’t want to stay too long at the party. More importantly, I think from my conversations with Graham, and Tim’s conversations with him, that’s really the amount of time we need to tell this story the way that we want to tell it with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Graham and I were at dinner in New York one night, just the two of us, and he said, “l look at Justified as a two chapter book: The first three years is the first chapter, and now the last three years is the second chapter.” It’s a book that I’m as excited to read as the people who watch the show.
The second confirmation comes from FX president Nick Grad at the show's premiere party in LA last night, according to Variety:
Grad also said that ending "Justified" after a healthy six-season run is "the plan right now," though that could always change given the needs of the creatives.
"We like having shows that rate really well, and there’s an instinct that you want it to go on forever. But it doesn’t," Grad noted. "Another metric that’s important to us [beyond ratings] is, 'What shows are going to be talked about in the next 20 years?' If you’re making a great, 80-hour movie, it has to have a beginning, middle and end. Going out at the right time is going to make your show last forever — we want to make shows that stand the test of time."
While none of this is really official confirmation, it seems like, unless anything changes in the near future, Justified will likely end after season six. Sad, but they all do have a great point—it's always best to end a show on a high note, while its still great, than to wait until everyone's sick of it and asking themselves, "wait, that show's still on?"
Justified airs on FX on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EST.
