Despite the highly-publicized delay that moved the film from Oscar season to the middle of the summer blockbuster crowd, The Great Gatsby still manages to impress us with this new trailer. Director Baz Luhrmann's style fits this kind of movie better than expected through his use of glitzy visuals and sleek production design. But there is also a darkness hovering over the whole thing as the secrets surrounding Gatsby (Leonard DiCaprio) begin to get unraveled, as Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) famously witnesses his fall.

Between beautifully rendered CGI shots of New York during the ‘20s, and quick cuts of the main characters in action, we see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s world come to life in a way that makes the whole movie pop off the screen. And though we don’t quite agree with the song choice during the trailer, everything on the visual side makes us believe that this could actually be a worthwhile cinematic attempt at one of the greatest novels of all time.

The Great Gatsby will hit theaters on May 10, 2013.
