3. CAT’S CRADLE, BY KURT VONNEGUT (1963)

Status: Not in development

Like all of Kurt Vonnegut’s novels, a big-screen adaptation of Cat’s Cradle would have to be reworked heavily by a screenwriter in order for it to be filmable. Some elements of the plot would need to be pulled back, and some of Vonnegut’s more manic tangents might need to be tamed, but the movie would work; we're not doubting that for a second.

With its brilliant humor and scary accurate portrayal of our violent world, there is a chance that Cat’s Cradle could wind up being the Dr. Strangelove of the 21st century. There were rumors years ago about Leonardo DiCaprio being linked to a movie adaptation, but any hope of that seeing the light of day has seemingly disappeared into the Hollywood vapor.
