Why We Praised It: Mind-bending horror that would toy with the player with screen tricks and data from memory cards
Why It Sucks: Nothing but cheap gimmicks wrapping an otherwise stock experience
When people talk about trippy mind-bending scares, someone always manages to bring up Eternal Darkness. With it’s fourth-wall breaking gimmicks – like telling the player their memory card had been wiped – the game truly did something that hadn’t been tried in the genre yet. However, it’s hard to get frightened by pre-scripted gimmicks in the age of the Internet where everything is already spelled out for you.
Eternal Darkness worked when it released, but there’s really nothing about this game that hasn’t already been spoiled by a million forum thread conversations.
