It’s that time of year again when all of the major comic companies unleash epic storylines that are designed to overload reader’s senses and clean out their wallets. But perhaps the most intriguing mega event yet is Marvel’s newly announced Spider-Island.

Written by Amazing Spider-Man mainstay Dan Slott, Spider-Island focuses on an unknown source mutating 16,000 New Yorkers (including various heroes and villains) causing them to develop powers identical to Spider-Man’s. Now with a city run amok with wannabe heroes and criminals, Spider-Man must find out who is behind this and put a stop to it.

“Back when Slott launched Spider-Man into the ‘Big Time’ last year, he started laying the groundwork for possibly the biggest Spider-Man story you’ve ever seen,” said Stephen Wacker, Marvel Senior Editor in a press release.

“The price of power is high for heroes and villains. The Avengers, the FF, Venom, Spider-Girl, Spider-Woman, the Sinister Six and even YOU are connected to ol’ Web-Head in new ways. By the end of this story, we’re going to see what Spider-Man means to Marvel Universe and just how far he’ll go to keep it safe...including some life-changing choices that have major consequences.”

Starting this August with Amazing Spider-Man #667, Spider-Island is one of those rare comic events that puts the focus squarely on the webslinger. Mostly a self-contained character, Spider-Man is very rarely the star of his own company wide event so it will be interesting to see where Spider-Island places him in the Marvel Universe once it’s over.

But while Spider-Island doesn’t start until August, anxious readers can begin picking up the events that lead up to this stunning storyline when Infested starts this April in Amazing Spider-Man #659.
