BAYONETTA (January 5)
What you were probably playing instead: Mass Effect 2
The first week of January 2010 was surprisingly stacked with quality games, but it was easy to overlook some of them in all the excitement over ME2. One title that didn't get its due was Bayonetta, a super-stylized third-person actioner oozing with sex, camp, and unabashed Japanese-style weirdness. The title character uses guns, her hair (which doubles as her skin-tight bodysuit), and kisses to defeat her enemies (angels?) through insanely dynamic combat sequences. The quality comes from an excellent control scheme that's easy to learn but difficult to master, as well as dazzling visuals. If you're up for a challenging brawl with near-perfect gameplay [Ed.—or if you're just an ass man], look no further.
