“American Pie” singer-songwriter Don McLean was arrested in Maine early Monday morning on assault charges, according to TMZ. Police responded to a 2:00 am 911 and arrested the singer on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. He has since been released on $10,000 bail, but has not released any official comment.
If you're not familiar, McLean's iconic song about "good ole boys" that were "drinking whiskey and rye" was released in 1971 and became a No. 1 hit in the U.S. for four weeks in 1972. "American Pie" was later named a Song of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. Most recently, McLean reportedly sold the song's original handwritten lyrics for $1.2 million at Christie's auction in April 2015.
