Having overcome several lifetimes of obstacles and hardships, Cashh (fka Cashtastic) has finally released his new album, Return Of The Immigrant. Seven years in the making, the album’s been on the cards—and at the forefront of his fans’ minds—ever since he was cruelly sent to Jamaica by the Home Office in the mid-2010s.
At 23 tracks long, Return Of The Immigrant (or R.O.T.I for short) is a mammoth collection, but he’s had a lot of life experience to put into it. From his years in the Caribbean, forging a life for himself with no support network, to winning his battle to return home, building up his rap career once again and making connections with a whole new generation of artists, it really has been a lot.
Naturally, the influence of Jamaica looms large across the whole album—from the swinging island rhythms that course through tracks like the Mark Morrison-sampling “Return Of The Man” to the bumping island vibrations of “Mi G Dem”. But those moments flow seamlessly into introspective, melodic rap on “Wash Clothes” and “Trench Baby”, as well as the drill influence that makes itself heard on tracks like “Double Tap / Mexican Wave”.
This album has been a long time coming, and although there’s an entirely understandable level of pain sewn into it, this is an undeniably triumphant moment for Cashh. Tune and celebrate with him below.
