People are reacting to Lil Wayne's performance of his hit 2008 song "Mrs. Officer" at Vice President Kamala Harris' Washington, D.C. house over the weekend for a hip-hop 50th-anniversary concert.
Wayne's performance of the track, which encompasses Weezy's romantic interest in a "lady cop," and references N.W.A.'s "Fuck Tha Police," had the internet mentioning how ironic the song choice was because of Vice President Harris' relationship with law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
The 40-year-old rapper thanked Harris and the White House for inviting him to the event, according to The Holloywood Reporter. “I appreciate this. My mom appreciates this too,” he said.
Shortly after the set went down, users took their jokes to X, formerly know as Twitter, to point out the humor in the rapper's song choice at the event.
"Missed a golden moment to replace "like a cop car" with "like ka-ma-la," one user wrote.
While Harris was never actually a police officer, "Kamala is a cop" memes flooded the internet while she and Joe Bidden were running for office with many pointing out the current VP's pro-police views and stances on criminal justice. Of note, Harris previously referred to herself as California’s “top cop.” She previously served as a California senator and held the positions of San Francisco District Attorney and Attorney General of California before becoming the 49th vice president of the United States.
Harris was also seen enjoying herself at the event and dancing along to Q-Tip's "Vivrant Thing."
Aside from hitting a few moves, the vice president took a moment to say a few words in honor of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. “Hip-hop is the ultimate American art form,” Harris said during the event, which included Common, Doug E. Fresh, MC Lyte, Fat Joe, and Slick Rick, according to THR. “Hip-hop now shapes nearly every aspect of America’s popular culture, and it reflects the incredible diversity and ingenuity of the American people. It combines rhythms from the continent of Africa, from the Caribbean, from Latin America, with the sounds of soul and gospel and R&B and funk to create something entirely new.”
She added, “And to be clear, hip-hop culture is America’s culture. It is a genre. It is music and melody and rhyme. And hip-hop is also an ethos of strength and self-determination, of ambition and aspiration, of pride, power and purpose. Hip-hop is a declaration of identity...”
