A Subway worker who went viral for recording himself trashing one of the chain’s restaurants has been fired, according to a company statement.
The handful of clips, one of which is posted above, initially made the rounds on Reddit and showed the worker deliberately trashing the location. The man, who Newsweek later discovered was named Jumanne Way, was seen purposefully walking across the deli counter with his shoes on, sinking his feet into Subway’s meat and condiment selections, and hopping off. One clip depicted him decorating a Subway restroom with a collection of deli meats, including placing a handful around the toilet seat. Another clip, discovered by Newsweek and since deleted, featured the man blatantly throwing meats and other sandwich ingredients around the restaurant.
“We appreciate you reaching out regarding your concerns,” Subway replied to one concerned patron on Twitter who wrote he would not be dining at Subway until the employee was fired. “This situation has been addressed and we have confirmed with the franchise of this location that the employee was immediately terminated after he learned of his actions.”
The chain’s U.K. branch confirmed the firing in a similar statement. “Subway and our network of franchisees take health and food safety extremely seriously and don’t condone any behavior that violates our strict policies in these areas,” they wrote on Twitter. “While Subway restaurants are individually owned and operated, we have confirmed with the franchisee of this location that the employee was immediately terminated after he learned of the employee’s actions.”
Newsweek ended up speaking with Jumanne regarding the videos. “I took the idea for walking on the food, and the toilet, from other controversial things that I’ve seen on the internet,” he told the publication. “I’m not exactly sure what, but I figured it would draw attention.”
He added that he had only been employed by Subway for about a month, and that a difficult few years ultimately led to the videos. “It’s a lot that happened within the last five years that led to those Subway videos,” he said. “The owners of the store were disappointed in my actions. I’ve been struggling with finding purpose in my life for years, and was uncertain in my ability to maintain stability. I gave up on myself. I always enjoyed Subway as a customer, and as a employee.”
However, in a response video posted to his YouTube account, Jumanne said he refuses to apologize for his antics in the videos. “I personally believe a person cannot apologize about something that they intentionally did,” he said, but added that he takes full responsibility for his behavior and will accept the consequences that come with his actions.
