The family of Melissa Lucio have thanked Kim Kardashian for sharing support in protesting the Texas death row inmate’s scheduled execution.

Son John Lucio spoke with TMZ, and said his mother was shocked to hear that Kim has expressed support against her impending April 27 execution. “When I shared with my mother about Kim Kardashian supporting her and advocating for her, she was just shocked and couldn’t believe it,” John said in the clip below, adding Melissa is “just in awe” and that Kim “being an advocate for her has really lifted her spirits.”

John said the entire family is thankful. “You know, it’s been 15 years she’s been incarcerated, and it’s come to the last days and Kim Kardashian came into the picture,” he said.

“So heartbreaking to read this letter from Melissa Lucio’s children begging for the state not to kill their mother. There are so many unresolved questions surrounding this case and the evidence that was used to convict her,” wrote Kim in a post she shared on Lucio’s case earlier this month. “This is one of the many reasons why I am against the death penalty—and why I pray her children’s wish is granted and their mother’s life is spared.”

The post included a letter to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to halt the execution, which was signed by Melissa’s 14 children.

In 2008, Melissa was convicted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, who she told police fell down the stairs. Her family, attorneys, and other supporters have said she maintained her innocence until armed interrogators coerced her into making a false confession.
