Christine Rollins, a 59-year-old careworker from Texas, was killed following a "very rare" attack from a pack of feral hogs in the early hours of Sunday. As the Associated Press reports, Rollins was attacked in the small town of Anahuac, which is located over 40 miles outside of Houston. Authorities have said the attack took place at around 6 a.m., so it was still dark outside at the time.
Rollins was discovered by the 84-year-old woman whom she cared for. The unnamed woman went outside and stumbled across her body laying between her car and the house. When authorities arrived at the scene, Rollins was found dead with numerous injuries. It is believed by investigators that she was attacked by multiple feral hogs as there were different size bites across her body.
"This is a very rare incident," Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthrone said earlier this week. While feral hog attacks can indeed happen, a 2013 study indicated that there were only four fatal attacks from hogs from 1825 to 2012 in the United States. There are, however, around six million feral hogs across the country, with three million of them alone in Texas.
"She was the most amazing woman that you could ever meet," said Tony Sandles Jr., Rollins' son-in-law. "She's very, very cautious," he added, explaining that she likely would have stayed in her car if she had known there were feral hogs out.
