While the PlayStation 5 is a ways off, Sony has already revealed quite a few details about what gamers can expect from the upcoming system.

In a new presentation, Sony shared that the PS5 will be backwards compatible and 8K-ready. Engagdet reports that the move to make the system backwards compatible is a gambit meant to ease the switch from PS4 to PS5 and encourage early adoption of the new system.

"We will leverage backwards compatibility to transition our community to next-gen faster and more seamlessly than ever before," the company reportedly shared during a corporate strategy presentation. The presentation also revealed that they expect the PS4 to be an "engine of engagement and profitability" for the next three years, perhaps hinting at the timeline for the arrival of the PS5.

The PS5 will be the fastest console that Sony has ever produced, taking advantage of a completely new CPU and GPU and the switch from hard drives to SSDs to reach speeds multiple times faster. At the presentation, they claimed that the new console could load a Spider-Man level in less than a second, something that took 8 seconds on their current system.

There is still no known release date for the PS5.

Outside of creating better experiences for gamers, Sony hopes to leverage some of its most iconic stories from the PlayStation and turn them into movies and TV shows. Earlier this week, Sony launched PlayStation Productions to try and bring its characters to screens big and small in a less interactive format.
