If you got a chance to seeTarsem Singh's Immortals this weekend, the director will be super-happy that you did. While doing press rounds for the movie, he was asked if he'd ever tackle the superhero genre. You'd figure that he would jump at the chance to save Green Lantern from obscurity or help Edgar Wright with Ant Man, but those films "did not interest him." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Singh, in the same breath, revealed that his dream project is to direct a live-action version of Samurai Jack.
The Emmy-winning animated series created by Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory, Sym-Bionic Titan) aired for three seasons on Cartoon Network starting in 2001. "I love Samurai Jack," Singh says to THR. "I would love to direct that. It's brilliant. The speed, it embraces where it comes from. I find that comic strip films are halfway grounded. They don't play my chord. But I love Samurai Jack. I love the animation."
The question is: How would such rich animation translate into live-action excitement for other fans of Samurai Jack? This is not the first time that question was raised. In the early 2000s, Brett Ratner was attached to helm a live-action project which was set up at New Line Cinema. Since then, the rights have since reverted back to Cartoon Network. But after Tarsem Singh's next project, Mirror Mirror, hits theaters, it is very well possible that we could see Samurai Jack and Aku dukin' it out on the big screen sometime after that.
