Jermaine Dupri Tells All: The Stories Behind His Classic Records (Part 1)

The Notorious B.I.G. "Big Poppa (So So Def Remix)" (1995)

Album: 12" Release

"The crazy part about that is that me and B.I.G. used to talk all the time. When Da Brat came out and Biggie came out, they both came out at the same time. They were basically doing shows together, and Da Brat's success took off before Biggie's. 'Funkdafied' became number one before Biggie ever had a number one record, and he was confused. It was like, 'Juicy' had came out, but it wasn't number one. It was big in hip-hop, but Da Brat had a number one record because she was on the radio.

"One day Biggie called me and he was like, 'Yo, how you get honey on the radio?' And I'm like, 'I don't know.' He was like, 'Man, I need a radio song.' At that time I saw that he wanted to be on the radio, and when they did 'Big Poppa,' that record was crazy as well but it didn't get on the radio. So he was like, 'Let J.D. do the remix.' They sent it to me and I made that version."
