The Day One Festival in the Belgium city of Roeselare just came to a close last week, but the incredible murals left by top street artists across the world live on. One of the most vibrant additions to the urban landscape is Berlin-based artist David Walker's new mural.
Walker's Belgian mural depicts a multicolored woman, his signature subject. The artist is know for his mantra, "No brushes or stencils, just spray," yet his figures have the controlled look of those made from more fine-tuned tools.
"I was introduced to Jessica (the subject of the mural) in Miami by a friend just one week before heading to Day One Festival to start painting," Walker wrote of his work via email. "We did a quick photo shoot, at one point Jessica was thumbing through my passport and telling me how envious she was as she had not made it to Europe. This felt like the perfect reason to use her image for the piece. Now she is big in Belgium at least."
Like many of the women he portrays, Walker's newest subject draws us in with her eye-catching colors yet keeps us at a distance. With her eyes shut, we can't help but wonder what she's thinking.
