Before this month, the U.S. fuel economy average had never hit 24 miles per gallon. Besting February's 23.9 average, April saw a record 24.1 mpg for new vehicles sold right now. University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute engineers began tracking the trend back in October 2007, when the fuel level sat at about 20 mpg. The Toyota Prius continues to lead the increasing pack of compact vehicles, which now take up 18 percent of the market.
