San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon could be on the verge of becoming the first woman to be named head coach of a Division I men’s basketball in history. Colorado State athletic director Joe Parker appears open to the idea of hiring a female coach but wouldn't name Hammon specifically. “I’ve thought a lot about that,” Parker said, per Kelly Lyell of the Coloradoan. “It’s the most frequently asked question I get, and recommended candidate. I’m not closing the door on any thought.” Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports reports that Hammon is "considered one of the top candidates by the administration."
The next Colorado State head coach would be replacing Larry Eustachy, who resigned last week and agreed to a settlement that will give three payments of $250,000 over the next two years. Eustachy was under investigation for alleged abusive behavior towards his players and coaching staff.
When asked what he was looking for in the school's next head coach, Parker said, "Obviously, we need someone that’s got coaching acumen. We need someone that's proven to be able to recruit talent that can compete on the court and in the classroom. And the piece for them I think is really vital is to find someone that really embraces all the outreach aspects of what it means to be a head coach."
If there's anyone who knows what it's like to be a Ram through and through, it's Hammon. After all, Colorado State is her alma mater.
