Volkswagen has started selling the world's most fuel-efficient vehicle, and it's not even close. Exclusive to Germany and Austria, the XL 1 is a diesel-electric hybrid that gets 260 mpg. The closest we can get in America is the Chevy Spark, which gets 36 mpg.

Only 250 models will be sold for $150,000, with 50 of them claimed already. The XL 1 gets its insane fuel efficiency not only from its diesel-electric hybrid engine but also from its design. Made with a carbon-fiber body, it only weighs 1,800 pounds and is also extremely aerodynamic. Even if we don't see it in the U.S., the XL 1 can be the catalyst for much higher fuel efficiency.
