Rugrats first aired on Nickelodeon back in August 1991, which, if we work on the basis that they’re about one when the show starts, means that Tommy and Chuckie would be now be 25. They’d be real-life adults, with jobs, lives, and possibly even babies of their own. With the news that Nick might be bringing them back, we thought we would take a stab at what Tommy, Angelica, Dil and the rest would be doing now it’s 2015.
(And before you say anything, we’re ignoring All Grown Up! because it doesn’t count).
Tommy Pickles
Early 20s Tommy would be bro. It’s a shame to say, but you know it’s true. He’d have been on his high school football team, and king of the keggers at college. He’s now be in that post-education first job freedom, loving life, rocking a tank top, getting down to Skrillex and ruining Coachella for the rest of us. But Tommy Pickles’ innate goodness still comes out. He never let the outer-bro-ness take over. He didn’t take advantage of the sorority girls who were to drunk to consent, and when someone suggested that the all-white frat had an N.W.A. costume party, he was the first to say “I don’t think that’s a very good idea.” He’s one of the good guys.
Chuckie Finster
Despite growing up together, you could just tell that Tommy and Chuckie were going to go their separate ways once they got to middle school. While Tommy was into sports and girls, Chuckie was just the right age to discover LiveJournal and World Of Warcraft. He dyed his trademark ginger locks black, after getting into Swedish death metal, and aced every test at his mid-level technical college. He now works in IT by day, and writes angry Reddit posts about the all-female Ghostbusters reboot by night.
Angelica Pickles
Angelica works in PR now, obviously. She’s pretty, reasonably successful, and just moved in with her gym-rat boyf. But she could have been so much more. At college, she dabbled in stand-up comedy to some genuine success, but work and life just got in the way. If she’d stuck at it she could have been Amy Schumer, but now she just spends her days putting together marketing plans.
Phil and Lil
Phil and Lil are those friends you have who never left your hometown. They settled down, still go to the same bars they always went to, and don’t ask for anything more. Lil is a stay-at-home mum with two kids. Phil is engaged to his high school sweetheart and works in a garage. They frequently post inspiring quotes and Minions memes on Facebook. The both love The Big Bang Theory. Also, Phil gets drunken booty calls from Angelica when she’s back in town.
Dil Pickles
Archetypical millennial Dil is now a popular vlogger or Vine star, beloved by millions of teenage girls and being paid $100,000 a tweet by various brands. Tommy doesn’t understand any of it and just calls his lil bro a nerd. In five years time though, he’ll be begging him to help him out with his mortgage payments.
Susie Carmichael
Angelica and Susie remained BFFs throughout high school, but then Susie went off to a liberal arts college and got heavily into veganism and indie rock. She now lives in Portland and works for a non-profit. Deep down though, not that she’d ever admit it, she can feel her politics creeping to the right. Give it 30 years and she’ll be running for Senate as a Republican.
Kimi Finster
In high school Tommy and Kimi got it on at a party, which was a big factor in him and Chuckie no longer being friends (though neither of them will admit it). Kimi’s mum and Chuckie’s dad separated after several years together, and Kimi moved away, limiting her interaction with the rest of the gang down to the very occasion social media post. Every now and then, Chuckie will unsuccessfully try and slide into her DMs.
Spike
Spike got hit by an Amazon delivery van and had to be put to sleep in the late-90s. R.I.P.
