Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson stopped by the show's "Weekend Update" to give his R. Kelly take.
"Before I continue, this guy is a monster and he should go to jail forever," Davidson began. "But if you support the Catholic Church isn't that the same thing a being an R. Kelly fan? I don't see the difference. Only like one's music is significantly better."
Davidson's comments refer to the multiple accusations of sexual assault against the Catholic Church. The comparison set the stage for the comic to point out certain flaws with "cancel culture."
"Once we start doing our research we're not going to have much left cause it seems like all really talented people are sick," Davidson says at the 1:23-mark. Davidson goes on to highlight a list of celebrities including Charlie Chapman and Mark Wahlberg who have done questionable things in their lives.
"All I'm saying is pretending these people never existed is maybe not the solution. The rule should be you can appreciate their work as long as you can admit what they did," Davidson said. "Every time one of us listens to a song or watches a movie made by an accused serial predator, you have to give a dollar to a charity that helps sexual assault survivors. I've already donated $142 and that's from the 'Ignition' remix alone."
Davidson's take comes after a tumultuous week for R. Kelly. After his infamous interview with Gayle King, he was jailed for unpaid child support. Three days after being taken into custody, an anonymous person paid his over $160,000 debt so that the singer could be released from jail.
