Power/Rangers, the very NSFW fan film that brought the internet to a grinding halt last week, was the work of director Joseph Kahn and producer Adi Shankar.
The gritty, bootleg depicted a team of grown-up Power Rangers as broken, dysfunctional survivors of an endless intergalactic war. The film was slapped with copyright violations by Saban Entertainment who own the rights to the Rangers license. Power/Rangers was pulled from YouTube and Vimeo, but was quickly allowed back on the air after fans petitioned Saban to let the ultraviolent re-imagining live again. The whole thing brought into sharp focus the idea of corporate ownership of art, when artists are no longer protected by fair use, and what it mean to just create something because you're a fan.
