The devoted fans of Star Wars can be…intense. And nobody knows that better right now than J.J. Abrams, who spoke with MTV News at the National Board of Review Awards about making the movie and living up to the enormous expectations of the franchise’s devotees.

It’s been so far so good for Abrams, as the first teaser trailer earned rave reviews. But that’s just one quick look at the movie, and Abrams certainly knows things could go terribly awry. The director had this to say about being in charge of the beloved franchise: “It is, without question, an intense and terrifying prospect,” he said before noting that “the opportunity is greater than the fear…I’m more excited about the work that everybody has done in the movie and this incredible cast.”

Abrams realizes that The Force Awakens it has to earn the audience’s respect, and it sounds like the cast did as well. “It was an amazing experience making this movie for everyone,” he said. “There was a sort of weird buzz in the air when we were making this movie, but we were all just aware of how hard we had to work to make it something worthy of people’s time.”

Excitement is already very high for this movie, which means that whenever the next trailer drops we’re sure to see a huge reaction regardless of whether it’s positive or negative.
