Sony is throwing a curveball into the traditional superhero movie model, and after pushing Spider-Man from 2016 to 2018 will be releasing a superhero movie in 2017 based around a female lead.

Sony will release Sinister Six in 2016, bringing together some of the biggest villains from the Spider-Man universe and uniting them to wreak all kinds of havoc on mankind. However, one of the powerful women inhabiting that same universe will soon rise up to fight against them.

Who will it be? That much is unclear, although some candidates might be Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestar, Spider-Woman or perhaps even some combination of the group. Given her mainstream popularity, Black Cat is our pick.

This announcement comes amid a flurry of pro-female moves in the comic book world as a whole right now, as just two weeks ago Marvel announced that the new Thor will be a woman. Additionally, Gal Gadot will be portraying Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman V. Superman movie from DC Studios.

Really, when you think about it, Sony is actually late to the party.
