In an update on the PlayStation Blog the gaming company says that “In the US, PS4 was #1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor.” That competitor of course being the Xbox One.

The Xbox One sold an estimated 143,000 consoles in the US in January compared to over 900,000 in December when it led the market. If what Sony says is true it's numbers should be north of 200,000 units.

In another telling note, it has been reported that Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One version two-to-one.

So what does it all matter? Well for you fanboys of different stripes out there this is some fresh ammunition but for the rest of the world's gamers it means if one console starts to so dominate the market it could result in more developers doing exclusives. There are still a few exclusives for each system but most games are released on both platforms. Basically Sony and Microsoft don't want to go the way of Nintendo's Wii U where developers no longer see it as a viable platform because of low sales and stop porting games to it.

The console war rages on.
