Original: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
Director: David Fincher
Stars: Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Joely Richardson, Yorick van Wageningen, Robin Wright, Geraldine James, Steven Berkoff, Embeth Davidtz, Elodie Yung
Screw it, we’ll come out and say it: Rooney Mara was robbed at the most recent Academy Awards ceremony. Instead of giving the trophy to the obvious, safe option, Meryl Streep (for The Iron Lady), the Oscar committee should have shown some bravery and awarded David Fincher’s uninhibited leading lady, who inhabited the complicated, introverted, and rock-hard character of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with staggering aplomb.
The same can be said for Fincher’s work behind the lens, for his take on the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel is a creepier, more compelling product than the 2009 Sweden-made original.
