On Saturday, El Salvador had its first day without a homicide since President Mauricio Funes took office nearly three years ago.

UN figures show that El Savador and its Eastern neighbor Honduras have the highest homicide rates in the world. Honduras was averaging 12 murders per day, a figure that jumped up to 18 a day at one point early this year, but no one was killed on Saturday due to a truce between the Salvatrucha and Mara 18 gangs.

Funes, who denied being behind the truce, referred to the Saturday’s events as a “milestone.” It’s terrible when no homicides during a 24-hour-period becomes something to celebrate, but such is life.
