12. Say Anything (1989)
Chances of getting laid (1-10): 4. Not a ton of hook-ups to be found here, but graduation parties are notorious for loving, so there’s still a chance.
The drink situation (1-10): 8. Good enough that they needed Lloyd Dobler to be the Key Master for the night. Oh, and one kid gets so plastered he can’t remember where he lives.
Chances of police interference (1-10): 3. These guys are pretty responsible (see above notes on the Key Master).
How’s the music? (1-10): 8. Aside from the legendary scene involving Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” blaring from Lloyd Dobler’s boombox, the soundtrack is packed with the likes of Living Colour, Cheap Trick, Fishbone, and Depeche Mode. Not too shabby.
The boombox scene in Say Anything… might be the film’s most famous sequence in the film (as well as one of the most iconic in all of cinema), but the 1989 comedy also shows viewers how to throw a great party.
Once Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) finally gets up the nerve to ask beautiful valedictorian Diane Court (Ione Skye) out on a date, he pops on his classic duster and takes her to a big high school graduation party. They barely spend any time together at the party (everyone keeps asking Diane what she’s doing there while Lloyd has duties as the Key Master), but it’s a rousing success of a party (and first date) that is wild enough to get one partygoer so wasted that he can’t even remember where he lives.
We, personally, try never to get that wasted, but when we do we’re always happy to have a Key Master on hand to keep us safe.
