Though owning a Zune in this age of iPod dominance was akin to owning a mini-disc player in the earlier stages of iPod dominance, the device was revolutionary—albeit for a short amount of time—due to its next-gen UI and wi-fi-enabled music sharing.

But the iPod Touch more or less rendered the Zune obsolete and its been struggling since its inception. And so, with the announcement by Microsoft yesterday that it will incorporate the device’s technology into Windows 7 phones and no longer produce stand-alone players, we’ve reached an end of era to which we hardly paid attention. At least the Windows phones will now be better for it.
