Just in case you thought that Men In Black 3 wasn't going to be a huge summer blockbuster, Sony intends on making it even bigger: The studio will release its alien creature-feature in IMAX. Announced on Monday, in a written statement, Sony Pictures president Rory Bruer said that releasing the movie in IMAX 3D "signals an event release." With Will Smith's Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K returning to police the Earth for otherworldly scum, audiences will see the universe's best kept secret in HD fashion on May 25, 2012.
The first two installments in the franchised garnered more than a combined $1 billion at the worldwide box office. So, it is no surprise that Sony and the IMAX Corporation have similar high hopes for the third installment. While plot details are not available en masse, we do know that the film will find Agent J traveling back in time to save a young Agent K (played by Josh Brolin) while attempting to avert another world-ending disaster.
Directed by Barry Sonnenfield, Men In Black III also stars Emma Thompson, Bill Hader, Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement, Rip Torn, and Nicole Scherzinger.
