7. Batman Returns (Various, 1992; SNES, 1993)

Another beat ‘em up, but a classic nonetheless—the 16-bit Batman Returns is one of the best games in the genre that we’ve ever played. The atmosphere served as a spot-on counterpart to the Tim Burton film it accompanied, and the combat was silky smooth and brutal, with the Dark Knight slamming clowns into the ground (or even into each other. Thug-fu for that ass!) And if you had the Sega CD version, you even got some driving stages as well. Batman was a serious badass. That is, of course, until Batman Forever, when Val Kilmer made him into a bitch. And let’s not even get started on Batman and Robin. We’re still reeling over "bat nipples." Still! [VIDEO]
