Arthouse Alert: "The Warriors" in Denver This Weekend (3/25-26)

Baseball Furies for life.

None

Walter Hill’s 1979 cult classic imagines a New York overrun by baseball-bat toting, chain-slinging, leather-vest-wearing gangs. When a truce between the gangs is ruined after the de facto leader is assassinated, the blame is placed on the Warriors, who are pursued all night from the Bronx to their home base at Coney Island.

As the gangs give chase, one night’s adventure becomes a visual piece of history for viewers familiar with New York in 2011, a far different city than the one the Warriors fight their way through. Rumor has it that director Tony Scott has planned a remake, so enjoy the original while its legacy is still untarnished. -Finn Cohen
