Director: Jacques Audiard
Stars: Tahir Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Jean-Emmanuel Pagni
Complex co-sign: Gangster flicks aren’t as common as they used to be, which is just one of the reasons why France’s best import of 2010, A Prophet, kicks so much ass. Tahir Rahim is great as Malik, an illiterate 19-year-old Arab forced to work for the cold blooded Corsican mafia while serving a six-year bid in a racially divided prison. Prior to this exemplary jail show, we thought shanks in the shower, from both knives and the don’t-bend-down alternative, were raw deals, but not even six seasons worth of Oz could’ve prepared us for A Prophet’s blunt force.
