Complex Sessions 070: Andres Campo

Spanish DJ and producer Andres Campo has a formidable reputation in his home country.

A DJ in the classic sense, Andres is most at home in long, all-night sets, digging deep into his records to let things roll out until sunrise. He spent his childhood falling in love with music by way of his mum’s disco records, local pirate radio stations, and his older brother’s rave tapes. In the ‘90s, that meant avidly devouring the trance and acid that was booming in Spain at the time, but in the decade-plus he’s been a producer and selector himself, it’s techno that keeps him going.

Ahead of his set at elrow in London on August 20, Andres has shared the exclusive recording of his 90-minute set from elrow’s epic party in Madrid back in April. A powerful, driving session of techno (with a bit of house music for good measure), it doesn’t let up one bit from start to finish. He’s also included a couple of recent gems from EI8HT, the label he co-founded with his close friend Eats Everything.

Tell us a bit about your selections in this mix.

This was for elrow town in Madrid, a huge festival for more than 30,000 people. I did a mix between my style, which is quite intense, and something a bit more groovy. It was a good one after two years without festivals.

What was the one track you absolutely had to include?

My new remix of Kase.O and SFDK’s track, “Ring Dingui”. It was the first time I played it on a big stage and it’s a mix between techno and rap. Now it’s released and working really well, I can’t wait to play it around the globe.

Any tracks that narrowly missed the cut?

Lots of them! I used to play long sets, so I always want to play more tunes. It’s difficult, because I think I have tonnes of good music, but maybe this time I missed some more intense tunes that I usually play.

What’s the first single or album you ever bought?

DC-10 by Pink Records. It’s nothing to do with the famous club in Ibiza—it was a compilation on two vinyls. I remember I was a kid and I spent all my money on turntables, so I bought this one so I could play all the tracks on it. It was better than buying 10 records at that moment because I was broke.

What’s the last physical record you bought?

“Youri Basic Theme”. My old one had some scratches, so I bought it again. I used to buy a lot of records—I have a lot—but nowadays, I buy old ones more than new ones because I play on digital. I love records, and I have a lot of nostalgia, so that’s the reason I always buy old tunes on Discogs.

What do you want to see happen musically over the next 12 months?

No more restrictions, of course, and also, I miss the days when playing good music was better than having good pictures or numbers on socials. I love socials, they’re a good way to be connected, but nowadays people focus more on being someone with success on socials than in real life—especially young people and new DJ. It’s a double-edged sword.

What trend or scene absolutely needs to die right now?

The ego. Always! It’s not a trend, but it’s always been there. I’d also say short sets. I come from an age where the resident DJ did the whole night, and I miss that.
