Sébastien Léger is celebrating a huge accomplishment in his DJing career, having been rocking the decks for two decades. We received word earlier this year that the French legend would be hitting the States for a special U.S. tour. Seeing as he's well-versed in house and techno, and found early inspiration in the likes of Daft Punk and Laurent Garnier, we just knew we'd be getting a real treat. Sadly, the U.S. leg of his tour (which was set to kick off in April) ended up being canceled. Regardless, 20 years is a long time to be doing anything, and while you might know his beats and how he can move a crowd, you might not be up on some of the more interesting facts of his life. Get to know Sébastien via the following video, then move on to find out 10 things that you didin't know about Sébastien Léger.
Sébastien Léger started DJing 20 years ago
He was already resident DJ at the age of 15, in a club in Brest (Britany, France) and other few places in the area.
The evolution of his DJ name(s)
Before choosing his real name as an artist, and being known as Sébastien Léger, at the age of 14 he named himself first as the (very original) name "DJ Seb," then eventually choose something "slightly" more original: "Seb Delta," to finish as "DJ Delta S." Eventually, he realized that being Sébastien Léger would just work better.
He's moved over 30 times in his life
Léger was born in Paris (Evry to be exact), but moved more than 30 times in his life, including spending four years (from nine to 13) in Nouméa,New Caledonia, where he started his love dance music
He once won a dance contest (as a break dancer) at the age of 16
(No, that's not a .GIF of Sébastian breakdancing.)
Guy Manuel's brother was instrumental in Léger getting signed
One night back in 1998, he went out at Gibus club in Paris, to see DJ Paul Johnson from Chicago with the intention of giving the DJ his very first vinyl white label. (Un)fortunately, Paul Johnson didn't show up to the gig, so he gave it to another DJ, Play Paul (Paul de Homen Christo, brother of Guy Manuel from Daft Punk). The following day he got a phone call from a certain Fab G who heard the record at Play Paul's home, saying he wanted to sign him for more music on his labels: Black Jack & Riviera. Those legendary French labels made Sébastien world famous as a producer at that time.
His first tracks were made solely on the MPC2000
His very first tracks and records were all made only with the help of a MPC2000 from Akai back in 1997-1998. No mixer, no FX, no compressors, no PC, no nothing. Just that sampler/sequencer machine. Eventually he started to collect more equipment (synthesizers, drum machines, mixer or FX racks), but he didn't start producing on a computer until 2007 when he got his first copy of Ableton Live 5.
Sébastien Léger doesn't do drugs or drink alcohol
Never did, never will (except a little French soft Cider from time to time, we're told).
He refused to remix the very first single of Lady Gaga
He had no idea of who Gaga was, and from what we're told, thought the song was "shit anyway."
He has two Michael Jackson tattoos
He's a Michael Jackson fan since his early age, and loved him so much that eventually got two MJ tattoos under both arms. Note that Sébastien never had the chance to see him live, he bought VIP tickets for his very last shows in London before Michael died.
He's a world record video game player
In the video game world, he owns a few World Western Records on some extremely hard games (genre is known as Danmaku or Modern Shooting game or shoot them up...). World Western Records are world records except in Japan, as they have all of the World Records. He's passionate fan of arcades and most of his free time is used to train on these games or chase and collect items & games of this genre only.
