Just over a year on from The Avengers LP, Hackney grime MC Jammz has returned with a new 13-track album called Pink Lemonade.
The new project presents a more rounded Jammz, coming off the back of a trip over to Brazil where he’s been cultivating relationships with Rio’s thriving grime scene alongside figures like SD9, Peroli, and regular Complex contributor Jesse Bernard who made a documentary, COMO VOCÊ, about this very subject.
News of the album first emerged back in October when Jammz released “Rebellious”, although he’d been dropping hints for a while and the album’s first single, “Dark & Light”, actually dropped way back in September last year. “Fi Real” then dropped at the top of this month and the final single, “I Heard”, dropped side-by-side with the album.
Joining the East Londoner on Pink Lemonade are Mez, Eklipse, Ian Leone, Deuce Lumiere and his Avengers sparring partner, Blay Vision. He produced a large chunk of the album himself, but for the remaining tracks he’s drafted in Champion and Royal-T (as Millennium Dubs), Jack Dat, and Gesher.
The title stems from a new, more circumspect mindset he’s adopted lately. Elaborating on that, he says: “Pink Lemonade is an LP which, for me, is basically a collection of lessons/mantras I was meditating on during the first lockdown. The main idea behind it is that life is bittersweet. You need the lows to enjoy the highs—it’s bittersweet, really, hence the name: Pink Lemonade.”
