Best New Music This Week

With only four weeks left in the decade, some of our favorite artists delivered new music this Friday, as we were blessed with projects from Roddy Ricch (Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial), French Montana (Montana), Fat Joe and Dre (Family Ties), Max B (House Money), and XXXTentacion (Bad Vibes Forever). Beyond the full-length offerings, some of the best new music this week came in the form of singles: YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s “Bring ‘Em Out,” Teyana Taylor’s “We Got Love,” Tame Impala’s “Posthumous Forgiveness,” and more. These are the best new songs this week.

Roddy Ricch f/ Mustard, “High Fashion”

Roddy Ricch lapped the genre’s crowded lane of melodic street-wise rappers this year, establishing himself as one of the most promising young stars in the game with scene-stealing guest appearances on Nipsey Hussle’s “Racks In the Middle” and DJ Mustard’s “Ballin.” The Compton native’s debut album, Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, further displays his hit-making prowess, never more so than on early standout “High Fashion.” Once again, Mustard laced Roddy with a hit, only this time in the form of a simple, sweet earworm that provides the perfect backdrop for his magnetic vocals.

Fat Joe f/ Ty Dolla $ign & Jeremih, “Drive”

Over two decades since the release of his debut album, 1993’s Represent, Fat Joe sounds refreshed on “Drive,” a highlight from his latest project, Family Ties. Backed by luxurious production courtesy of Cardiak and Hitmaka, the Bronx legend’s charisma shines on the opening verse, which you can imagine him delivering while speeding down ocean-front highways in Miami. Even better, rap’s go-to hook-killer, Ty Dolla $ign, handles the chorus, before Jeremih closes things out with a show-stopping verse of his own.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again, “Bring ’Em Out”

Fresh off landing his first No. 1 album with October’s AI Youngboy II, NBA YoungBoy returns with a new banger, “Bring ‘Em Out.” The celebratory track arrives alongside a luxurious visual that acts as the Baton Rouge rapper’s victory lap, and finds him showing off his jewelry, shoe collection, and adorable baby son to the cameras. As always, NBA doesn’t fail to remind listeners of his toughness, rapping, “I’m a gangsta for real, ain’t no cappin’/If I tell ’em go kill, they gone stamp it/I be thuggin’ for real, I ain’t panicked.”

French Montana f/ PartyNextDoor, “Wanna Be”

It’s undeniable at this point. French Montana a certified hit-maker. This trend continues on his new album, Montana, which features a star-studded tracklist that includes A-listers like Drake, Post Malone, Chris Brown, Swae Lee, Quavo, Juicy J, Kodak Black, and Gunna. And yet, perhaps the best feature on the LP comes courtesy of one of the most underappreciated R&B singers these days, PND, who floats over the tropical production so convincingly that you wonder whose song it was to begin with.

XXXTentacion, “Ex Bitch”

Bad Vibes Forever, XXXTentacion’s final album, Bad Vibes Forever, arrives a year and a half after the rapper’s untimely death. The long-awaited LP has 25 songs and a loaded guest list that includes everyone from Lil Wayne (“School Shooters”) to Blink-182 (“It’s All Fading to Black”). “Ex Bitch” is an early standout, as the late rapper reflects on lost love and a former relationship that was centered around lust, over a acoustic-guitar-laden beat. Max B f/ A$AP Ferg, “Champagne Wishes”

Max B blessed fans this week with House Money. The EP’s stacked lineup of guests includes French Montana, Jadakiss, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Cam’ron, Dave East, Wiz Khalifa, and A$AP Ferg, the last of which appears on the standout cut “Champagne Wishes.” Backed by a soulful beat worthy of being performed at a jazz club, Max sounds like he never left, as he sing-raps about the finer things: “Champagne wishes, caviar dreams/Cru in the gas tank, make the cars lean/All my niggas winning, this is our team/Millions in drug money, the music is all clean.”

Teyana Taylor, “We Got Love”

After Teyana Taylor performed “We Got Love” on Saturday Night Live with Kanye West last year, listeners were surprised when the track didn’t appear on her West-produced album K.T.S.E. Now, over a year after it was cut from the project due to sample clearance issues, “We Got Love” has been officially released. The track, which samples The Younghearts’ “We’ve Got Love (You Better Believe It),” will potentially appear on the highly-anticipated follow-up to K.T.S.E. Teyana had previously told fans the project would arrive this Friday, but it appears there has been a delay.

Tame Impala, “Posthumous Forgiveness”

It’s been over four years since Tame Impala’s critically-acclaimed third studio album, 2015’s Currents, which marks the longest stretch of time between any of the Australian band’s albums. Thankfully, their highly-anticipated return looks like it will be well worth the wait. After releasing two singles this spring, and a third (“It Might Be Time”) in October, Tame Impala returns with “Posthumous Forgiveness,” the newest cut off the band’s fourth studio album, The Slow Rush, which is slated to arrive on Valentine’s Day next year.
