An anti-Islam banner has made an appearance over Perth’s Kwinana Freeway on Wednesday morning, this time with an interesting twist, WAToday reports. The banner features not only the slogan “Stop The Mosques”, but also a cry of support for the western state’s footy team – bizarrely emblazoned with “Go WCE” just above the former.
Five men hung the sign on the overpass, between Como Jetty and the Royal Perth Golf Club, and then stood behind it as motorists passed below. The United Patriot Front have since taken responsibility for the stunt on their Facebook page.
This comes after four people were kicked out of an Eagles-Dockers game in April for putting up what is possibly the same banner at half-time, and another being unfurled at a Collingwood-Richmond game at the MCG in round two.
The AFL and WA Football Commission have been firm in condemning this kind of behaviour. "The views do not represent our game in any way and the AFL would ask media and public not to give the group the publicity they are craving," AFL representative Patrick Keane said.
Notably, Perth has not been free of similar incidents, as it was Eagles fans that booed former Sydney Swans player Adam Goodes at Domain Stadium last year. The banner perhaps shows where the priorities of those concerned with the "Islamisation" of our country lie; it goes fear-mongering, and then footy straight after. What's more Aussie than that?
