Melania Trump was met with loud boos Tuesday while delivering a speech at the B'More Youth Summit in Baltimore, Maryland.
The event aimed to warn teens about the dangers of opioid abuse, a problem Trump has attempted combat through her Be Best initiative for children's well-being. As part of the summit, FLOTUS took the stage to address the crowd of middle school and high school students, many of whom heckled Mrs. Trump throughout her five-minute-plus speech.
"I hope that the knowledge you gain here will help you tackle the tough decisions you may be faced with, so that you can lead a healthy and drug-free life," Trump told the crowd after being greeted with mix of cheers and boos. "Get involved and be a part of the solution," Trump urged the audience. "Talk to your family and friends about what you have learned and help them understand how they too can be part of this powerful movement."
CNN reporter Kate Bennett, who has been covering Mrs. Trump for the last several years, said Tuesday's summit was the first time she ever witnessed FLOTUS get booed while giving solo remarks during a public event. The first lady's speech took place just weeks after she took her Be Best initiative to the Boston Medical Center, where she was met by a large protest against her husband's immigration and health care policies.
Donald Trump received backlash back in July when he referred to a primarily black Baltimore district as a "disgusting, rat, and rodent infested mess." His remarks were aimed at Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, an African American congressman who died last month at the age of 68.
