A former bus driver was sentenced to no jail time after pleading guilty to raping a 14-year-old girl

According to the Watertown Daily Times, 26-year-old Shane M. Piche was sentenced to 10 years of probation and a required registry as a level 1 sex offender last week after pleading guilty to third-degree rape. Level 1 sex offenders do not appear on sex offender databases that can be searched by the public.

Piche met the 14-year-old while working as a school bus driver and raped her at his apartment. The noticeably light sentence garnered a reaction from the people involved and the wider internet.

“I wish Shane Piche would have received time in jail for the harm he caused to my child,” the victim’s mother shared in a statement. “He took something from my daughter she will never get back and has caused her to struggle with depression and anxiety.”

Piche previously worked with Watertown City School District's bus company.

Judge gives no jail time to school bus driver who admitted he raped a 14-year-old student. Jefferson County judge James P. McClusky explained the sentence by saying admitted rapist Shane Piche had no priors and had “sexually assaulted only one victim.” https://t.co/cH4WA8dAQZ pic.twitter.com/PGZud8GzzU
