Unlike many other female painters and artists of the time, Valadon enjoyed great financial and artistic success, due in part to her connections to other artists such as Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec, in addition to her undeniable talent. Valdon lived an eccentric life and was often surrounded by animals which became her subjects, which is exemplified in her painting, Two Cats.
