On Saturday night, Portuguese MMA fighter Joao Carvalho lost by TKO to his opponent Charlie Ward at a Total Extreme Fighting 1 match in Ireland. And while Carvalho appeared to be OK after the match—he looked exhausted but was seemingly aware of what was going on around him—he had to be rushed to the hospital a short time later to undergo brain surgery.
Earlier today, Carvalho’s coach took to Facebook to announce that, sadly, the fighter was unable to overcome the head injuries he suffered during his match against Ward. He passed away late yesterday at the age of just 28.
