Here in the U.S., we have seen our fair share of wild sports brawls. But we can’t remember anything quite as brutal as what took place during a Chinese Ice Hockey Association game recently.

According to reports out of Beijing, a player named Lang Bingyu has been banned from the sport for life after he was found guilty of assaulting an opposing player on purpose. The details of the alleged assault are pretty wild, too. Apparently, Bingyu elbowed fellow CIHA player Huang Peng in the head and neck during a game. And after he got done doing that, he reportedly used his hockey stick to stab Peng in the mouth, which resulted in him losing three teeth and suffering a gigantic cut on his cheek. That cut required 42 stitches and landed Peng in the hospital. It resulted in Bingyu’s lifetime ban.

“It’s rare to impose such a penalty for a player in Chinese ice hockey,” the director of the China Winter Sports Center said earlier this week. “This is one of the most severe penalties. But for such a flagrant injury incident, it just crossed the bottom line of our tolerance. You play a sport match, you should behave like a sportsman, but not a villain.”

Behaving like a villain is OK in our book. But stabbing someone with your hockey stick? Yeah, that’s no good.
