On Monday night, Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov was all smiles. And why wouldn't he be? His team is off to a 10-1 start this season. He has been excellent in goal for the Avs. And he was dressed up in a Duffman costume for Halloween:

But just a few hours later, that smile was reportedly gone. According to police—who arrested Varlamov on second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges last night—the Avalanche goalie allegedly attacked a woman believed to be his girlfriend very early Tuesday morning. The woman's lawyer claims that Varlamov threw her into a wall and then stomped on her after she fell to the floor. She was reportedly hospitalized for a brief period of time after the alleged incident and later said that this was not the first time that Varlamov had attacked her. So Varlamov was arrested after the Avs practice last night and booked on the charges listed above:

Varlamov's father is disputing the reports that are out there and saying that his son is not guilty of committing any crimes this week. And as Deadspinpointed out, there are already some conspiracy theorists out there who believe that this incident was somehow staged in order to try and force the Russian Olympic team to remove Varlamov from their roster (WTF?). Regardless of what really happened, though, it's clear that this was not how Varlamov saw the rest of this week playing out back on Monday night.

UPDATE:

The woman in the case still hasn't been identified. But her lawyer did provide CBS4 in Denver with these images of her:
