British People Are Naming Their Babies After Drake, Iggy Azalea, Pharrell, and the Kardashians

No word on how many babies have been named "Meek" this year. Baby reference names in the UK include Drake, (Iggy) Azalea, Pharrell, Rita Ora, KIm K., and more.

Celebrities have no chill when it comes to naming their babies. If you thought Kimye callingtheir kids North and (reportedly) Easton West was wild, think again. Nicholas Cage really named his kid Kal-El, after Superman. Jason Lee really named his child Pilot Inspektor, after nothing in particular. Jermaine Jackson really, really named his son Jermajesty. Yeah, JERMAJESTY.

Celebs are savages when it comes to naming babies, and yet for some reason, regular-ass people are still naming their babies after these glittery monsters. According to a study by the Office Of National Statistics in the UK, the most prevalent pop-culture referencing baby names of 2014 in England and Wales include Drake, (Iggy) Azalea, Pharrell, Rita Ora, the lads in One Direction, and even the Kardashian clan. Take a look at some of the numbers below:

Here are some stray observations we pulled from the data:

  • Since the release of N*E*R*D’s debut record in 2002, 391 babies in England and Wales have been named Pharrell. Before then? Zero.
  • Even though virtually no one knows Rita Ora’s name in North America, at least 65 UK parents saw fit to name their bundles of joy after the singer.
  • 30 English babies were christened Azalea in 2014, during the heyday of “Fancy.” That’s right: one annoying song brought ten times more Azaleas into the world than we had just 5 years earlier—in 2009, just 3 Azaleas were born. Before that? Zero.
  • The most “Drake” babies were born in 2012, with a total of 49 bouncing Drizzy namesakes causing anarchy in the UK. To be real, it’s no coincidence that these babies were conceived during the promo cycle for Take Care.

You can spend a little more time with the numbers here. There’s no mention of how many babies were named after Meek Mill—maybe Meek isn’t baby-lotion soft enough to be immortalized via infant.
