Attention, West Hollywood residents and shoppers: "reusable" is your new favorite word. That's because today, the Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban goes into effect, outlawing the use of plastic bags for retail stores and supermarkets that are at least 10,000-square-feet.

The ban was approved in August, and created in the same vein as the bans in Los Angeles County, Malibu, Santa Monica, Long Beach and Calabasas. Below is West Hollywood's motivation for the ban:

None

There will be a 10 cent charge for paper bags at checkout, which stores will use to pay for the paper bag supply and "other promotional materials related to implementing the ordinance." Phase two of the ban focuses on retailers that are less than 10,00-square-feet and will be implemented on August 20.
