19. No Room at the Inn for George McGovern
Highest Office Held: South Dakota Senator
Failed presidential contender George McGovern was about as good at running motels as he was at campaigning for America's highest office. His Stratford Inn wasn't even open for two years before the business fell into bankruptcy.
Though McGovern sagely turned the experience into articles and policy proposals regarding small business, the man couldn't escape the fact that he was not cut out for innkeeping.
Writer Dan Woog wrote this surreal piece about spending Super Bowl Sunday in 1990 at McGovern's Inn after the former South Dakota Senator's death last year.
